Welcome! Frim Sidekick was created with a simple but powerful goal: to bridge the gap between school and home by making French reading accessible, enjoyable, and manageable for every family — whether or not parents speak French themselves.
Backed by 20 years in the classroom
I'm a French Immersion educator, and for more than two decades the classroom has been my second home. Over the years I've guided hundreds of students and their families through the unique rewards — and real challenges — of learning in a second language.
I founded Frim Sidekick because I kept seeing the same thing: parents who deeply want to support their children at home, but who simply don't have the French reading materials or the right tools to make meaningful home practice possible. I wanted to change that — to take what works in my classroom and put it within reach of every family.
You don't need to be fluent in French to be your child's greatest academic ally.
Learning a second language shouldn't feel like a barrier — it should be an adventure you share together. Frim Sidekick was built to be the companion that makes that partnership effortless, so you can focus on the moments that matter.
Inclusive learning, by design
I believe strongly that French Immersion is for everyone. Not just for the students who find language learning easy — for every child. With the right supports in place, all kids can be successful. That belief is built into everything Frim Sidekick does.
Every reading activity is offered in three differentiated levels so that all students can access the same curriculum content, learn the same key vocabulary, and complete texts of equal length — at least 350 words. Differentiated reading means a child is never held back by a text that's too hard, and never bored by one that's too easy. They read what's right for them, and they grow from there.
Inclusive learning isn't a feature you turn on — it's the foundation. When we meet children where they are and give them the supports they need to succeed, confidence follows. And confidence, more than anything else, is what carries a child forward in a second language.
Closing the library-book gap
For years, French reading came home as a library book and little else. Parents were left in an impossible position: they couldn't tell what their child was actually reading, let alone whether the story was understood. Frim Sidekick closes that loop — every French text your child reads comes with an English guide for you, so you always know the story, the vocabulary, and the questions worth asking.
Reading with kids in a second language
Reading with your child in French — even when you don't speak it yourself — is one of the most powerful things you can do. Here are the principles that guide every Frim Sidekick guide, and that I hope you'll bring to the kitchen table too.
- Focus on what they do know, not what they don't. Every child brings something to the page — a word they recognize, a picture they can describe, a guess that's almost right. Build on that.
- Celebrate success, every time. Rather than focusing on what's missing from the interaction, notice what your child did well — the word they decoded, the question they asked, the connection they made — and name it out loud.
- Let confidence lead understanding. As their skills and confidence grow, they'll be able to express themselves better and increase their depth of understanding. Fluency and comprehension bloom together, on the child's timeline.
- Remember what they're really doing. They are learning an entirely new way of communicating. True growth and understanding take time. The road to bilingualism is a long one and requires perseverance — yours and theirs.

Asking for key details
Prompt your child to identify who the story is about, where it takes place, or what problem the main character is solving.
Summarizing together
Have your child explain the main idea in their own words, using the summary in your guide as a helpful reference.
Making predictions
Pause mid-story and ask, "What do you think will happen next — and what clues tell you that?"

Use the illustrations and headings before reading to predict new vocabulary together.
Guide to reading levels
Each reading activity is adapted into three distinct levels so that all students can access the same curriculum content, learn the same key vocabulary, and complete texts of equal length (at least 350 words).
Facile (Beginning Reader)
- Who it's for
- Students who are building foundational French reading skills or need maximum support with decoding.
- Sentence structure
- Very short, simple sentences (often 4–6 words) focusing on one clear idea at a time.
- Vocabulary
- Uses everyday, familiar words. Complex transition words are replaced with simple language (e.g., "c'est la maison de" instead of "abrite").
- Key subject-specific words
- Essential science, math or social terms are kept in bold and supported by quick, clear descriptions.
Moyen (Grade-Level Target)
- Who it's for
- Students comfortable with everyday French reading who are working at the expected grade level. This is the level most children should start with.
- Sentence structure
- Clear, direct sentences connected by simple linking words (and, but, because, so), organized into paragraphs that reflect end-of-Grade-4 reading targets.
- Vocabulary
- Everyday, accessible vocabulary with straight-to-the-point phrasing — avoiding complex or overly formal language.
- Key subject-specific words
- Essential science, math or social terms are kept in bold and explained naturally within the text.
Difficile (Enrichment Reader)
- Who it's for
- Confident, advanced readers ready for richer text structures and academic phrasing beyond the grade-level target.
- Sentence structure
- Varied and fluid sentences organized into full, well-developed paragraphs that stretch the reader with more complex syntax.
- Vocabulary
- Incorporates precise, academic French vocabulary (capital, fournir, se révéler) to challenge and expand students' language skills.
- Key subject-specific words
- Essential science, math or social terms are seamlessly woven into standard French.
It is the parent who chooses the level — not the program. A child's self-esteem is closely tied to their literacy skills and successes, so no machine should ever choose a level for a child. You know your child best, and the right level is the one that lets them feel capable and grow with confidence.
